An overactive pelvic floor (OAPF) is a relatively new concept in pelvic floor health. For a long time muscles pelvic floor muscles were identified as weak, requiring ‘kegels’ or pelvic floor strengthening however there was a missing link. Some women and men had the opposite issue of excess activity in their pelvic floor muscles.
An overactive pelvic floor can lead to the following symptoms:
- urinary urgency and frequency
- incomplete emptying of urine
- incomplete emptying of your bowels
- chronic pelvic pain
- painful sex
