Location: Belle Chasse, LA, surrounding cities, and offshore
Job Type: Full Time

Introduction to the Role:

The Crane Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of hydraulic and friction cranes in marine and offshore environments. This role plays a vital part in supporting construction, logistics, and vessel operations by executing complex lifts of materials and equipment. The Crane Operator ensures all lifting operations adhere to safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and project-specific procedures.
In addition to crane operation, this position is responsible for conducting equipment inspections, performing light maintenance, and collaborating closely with rigging teams, vessel crew, and supervisors to maintain a safe and productive job site.

Summary of Essential Job Functions:

  1. Lift Planning & Execution:
Perform safe crane lifts of materials, equipment, or structures on marine vessels and construction sites. Follow lift plans, adhere to load charts, and ensure all lifts are conducted within crane operating limits.
  2. Pre-Operation & Post-Operation Inspections:
Conduct daily inspections of crane components, rigging gear, wire ropes, and safety devices. Report and document any issues or irregularities. Perform light maintenance to ensure cranes are in operational condition.
  3. Rigging & Equipment Readiness:
Verify proper rigging and load configurations before each lift. Confirm slings, shackles, spreader bars, and lifting accessories are certified and in good condition.
  4. Communication & Coordination:
Work closely with signal persons, riggers, foremen, and superintendents to coordinate lifts. Maintain radio or visual communication during crane operations to ensure safety and precision.
  5. Compliance & Safety Protocols:
Follow all company safety policies and applicable OSHA/maritime regulations. Participate in daily safety meetings, conduct Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and help identify potential hazards.
  6. Documentation & Reporting:
Complete crane inspection logs, lift plans, and operational checklists. Maintain records of maintenance activities, fuel logs, and any incidents or near misses.
  7. Team Collaboration & Site Support:
Support site operations by assisting with equipment staging, material movement, or logistics when not actively lifting. Contribute to a collaborative and safety-focused job site culture.
  8. Adaptability to Marine & Offshore Environments:
Operate cranes in variable conditions including offshore platforms, barges, and shipyards. Remain compliant with marine and environmental protocols and prepared for extended offshore rotations.
  9. Equipment Familiarity & Proficiency:
Operate various crane types including hydraulic, friction, and (preferably) ringer cranes. Understand operational differences and apply manufacturer instructions and load charts appropriately.
  10. Ad Hoc Responsibilities:
Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Project Manager related to crane operations, safety, or logistical support.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • NCCCO certification is required
  • Minimum of 5 years of crane operating experience in marine, construction, or offshore environments
  • Experience with friction and hydraulic cranes required; ringer crane experience preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret lift plans, rigging drawings, and load charts
  • Strong knowledge of safe lifting practices, OSHA regulations, and crane maintenance procedures
  • Excellent communication and situational awareness skills
  • Ability to work in high-risk environments and follow precise direction
  • Physical stamina to operate equipment for extended periods and work in demanding conditions
  • Valid TWIC card and ability to work offshore for extended rotations

Working Environment:

Crane Operators work outdoors on vessels, platforms, and construction sites in all weather conditions. The role includes offshore work, rotating shifts, and confined space operations. Operators must remain vigilant in dynamic environments around heavy equipment and marine traffic.

Physical Demands:

This role requires the ability to sit for extended periods while operating equipment, climb ladders, lift up to 50 lbs, wear fall protection, and work in elevated or confined spaces. Visual acuity and hearing are essential for effective communication and lift accuracy.
