A day in the life of a Textile Designer at Smartwool includes collaborating with the Senior Designer on the design, creation, and delivery of brand right print and knit patterns for socks lines that support strategic initiatives. The role uses strong design and artistic skills to identify trends, execute the seasonal design/development process, and create innovative textile designs from conception to production that meet market needs and drive sales. The position owns the execution of SMUs and product collaborations and schedules timely reviews to ensure accuracy and calendar adherence. Responsibilities Research and identify trend directions; pull and review inspiration, design concepts, and create presentation boards for trend/color palette seasonal kick-off. Develop awareness of key accounts and channels of distribution from market insights and trends to ensure concept feasibility. Execute design and development of initial seasonal design category in context of larger category assortments. Design according to style plans, sales needs, and emerging trends; ensure timely execution of product development calendar. Create 3D sketches; conceptualize new and unique patterns/styles and concepts meeting product briefs. Troubleshoot issues with graphs, scale, digitization pattern creation from mills and provide solutions to the Senior Design team. Adapt design style to different nuanced voices within the brand for varying projects. Manage design tech packs of assigned styles from concept through SMS production ensuring BOM quality and accuracy. Collaborate with Product Management and Development teams with openness to feedback to achieve the best result. Work with Senior Designer to design, graph, and develop ideas for performance and lifestyle sock lines within circular knitting guidelines. Generate, update, and recolor seasonal CADs within 3D Shima Seki software as needed. Produce detailed tech packs and follow through development from initial creation to final SMS. Input accurate tech pack information into the ENOVIA system; follow up with development on tech pack creation/revision/review and submit approvals. Assist Senior Designer in organizing samples for meetings and preparing design review documents for distribution to the team. What do you need to succeed? We value diverse skills and experiences. This role requires 3-5 years of experience in textile design or a related field. Education in a related field is helpful but not required if you have the relevant experience. The foundation skills include: High creativity and artistic ability with keen attention to color, texture, and pattern; ability to visualize in three dimensions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and follow up effectively. Ability to work independently and collaboratively under tight deadlines. Self-driven, able to thrive in a fast-paced environment and maintain good work habits. Creativity, technical capability, and merchandising sensibility; ability to sketch. Extensive knowledge of sock construction and technical knit design. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe products, CAD, and Mac computers. Design/Textile Design degree; knit construction and structure understanding required.
